Of course "developement" of language took place before there
were writers and educators, but the grammatical rules for
written language--the "invented rules"--were evolved by only
those who could evolve them, the literate few. Presumably, the
prescriptivist educators, who have evolved a system of rules
for effective speech and writing, are trying to educate the
vast, illiterate populations. Why do you consider teaching an
imposition, because it vies with actual usage? Is there
something sacrosanct about actual usage? How is anyone to
learn how to read and write without the rules of grammar?
